Making New Goals

A new year marks a time for making new goals. We see it everywhere. Did you know that the bible encourages us to have goals? The bible is filled with God’s goals, plans, & purposes for us and for our future with him. It’s important to keep his goals in front of us so we can accomplish his will for our lives and his will in the earth. As we reach our goals, it inspires others to reach theirs.

I have to admit that I am not much of a goal setter. I may have some things in my mind that I want to accomplish, but generally speaking, it’s rare that I write them down or keep focused on them. There are a few life goals that I keep in front of me, but not much else. As I look back on my life, I know I would have accomplished much more had I written them down and set up some kind of plan. One thing I do know, you’re never too old to start. This year I have some goals set for my personal & professional life. I believe I will keep them before me.

In order to come up with goals, it’s important to spend time with the Lord first so he can show you what he wants you to accomplish. Oftentimes, we put the cart before the horse by coming up with a plan and then we ask him to bless it. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust the Lord, not to rely on our own understanding, acknowledge him & he’ll direct us.

Many times we rely on our understanding. In other words, we shouldn’t try to figure out everything on our own. Acknowledging God is seeking his will in everything we do. As we get the plan from him, it’ll be a great one and he’ll help us accomplish it!

Psalm 37:4-5 says, “Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.”

As we delight ourselves in the Lord, he puts a desire in our heart. Then as we commit our way to him and trust him, he brings it to pass. In terms of goals, he shows us the goal he wants us to reach in every area of our lives and gives us the steps to reach them. As we trust him in it, he brings it to pass.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 is a familiar scripture to many people. It is very important in terms of goals and trusting the Lord.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jer. 29:11-13)

God has plans for our lives. His plan is good. It won’t harm us. His plans give us hope and a future. In order for those plans to come to pass we must pray and seek him. As we do, his good plan we come to pass in our lives.

Lastly, write the goal down. It is proven that when we do so we are more committed to working on seeing it come to pass. Hab. 2:2 tells us to write the vision and make it plain. Take some time to jot down goals you have for 2014 and perhaps some life goals. Ask the Lord to show you the steps to take to bring them to pass.

Happy Goal Setting!!!!
