What Are You Saying?

Prov. 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,  And those who love it will eat its fruit.

How powerful are our words! What we say can make or break our lives, as well as others. Words come out of our mouth based on what we think about. So speaking and thinking are inseparable. In Matthew 12 Jesus shares this fact with his disciples.

Matt. 12:33  A tree is identified by its fruit. Make a tree good, and its fruit will be good. Make a tree bad, and its fruit will be bad.

Matt. 12:34 You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.

Matt. 12:35 A good person produces good words from a good heart, and an evil person produces evil words from an evil heart.

Matt. 12:36 And I tell you this, that you must give an account on judgment day of every idle word you speak.

Matt. 12:37 The words you say now reflect your fate then; either you will be justified by them or you will be condemned.

Most of us do not consider ourselves to be evil or that our words are evil..

But evil here is referring to anything contrary to God’s word. When we do or say things that don’t correspond with God’s word, He considers it to be evil. In verse 34 we see that our heart determines what we say. The King James version says, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”

When we think on wrong things, eventually they come out of our mouth. Disciplining the mouth comes through disciplining the mind. What we think about over and over will make all the difference in what we say and do.

Matt. 15:11 You are not defiled by what you eat; you are defiled by what you say and do.”

Matt. 15:17 Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes out of the body.

Matt. 15:18 But evil words come from an evil heart and defile the person who says them.

Saying words that are contrary to the word of God spoil, tarnish, poison & destroy us.

That’s what defile means! There are simple phrases we can take out of our vocabulary that can start the ball rolling in the right direction… “That’s killing me” “Take care” I’m just dying to go”… Eventually, these words will make a huge difference and if we say them enough, we get programmed to believe them subconsciously. Of course, saying “I’m stupid”, “I’m no good” “I can’t do anything right” destroys any forward motion in our own lives. Those words began with thoughts that we continued to think about.
