Mental health is an important issue around the world. We find people committing heinous crimes, abusing others, etc. and the root of it is often mental illness. There are many reasons for mental illness, but the main way out of it is through meditating on God’s word. As we do, we think the way God intended us to.
Romans 12:1-2 tells us to yield ourselves to God and to be transformed by the renewing of our mind. As we do we prove what his will is in our life.
My husband, Robb is a great example of a life transformed through God’s word. At the age of 22 he ended up in a mental ward. He hardly ate or slept for 3 months. He wanted to kill himself. He got the name of a psychiatrist from his Mother that his Father went to when he was younger. The doctor put him in the hospital immediately. He didn’t let him go home to get his clothes. We were married 1 ½ years at the time.
Most patients remained there for about 5 days or so. Robb was there 42 days. After about a month an orderly shared Jesus with him. Robb prayed to make Jesus the Lord of his life. When he did, he was a changed man. He quit doing drugs, alcohol and chasing women. In order to get rid of the negative thinking, he spent lots of time reading his bible and memorizing scripture. This made all the difference. The thoughts of killing himself left. He discovered he was a new creation in Christ. To this day Robb continues to give himself over to God’s word. He allows his word to direct his thinking. He has authored over 30 books, pastored successfully and spoken around the world as a result of changing the way he thinks.
Is. 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
As we keep our mind on God and his word, we have his peace that passes all understanding. Jesus was tormented in the garden and with the crown of thorns to pay the price for our mental torment. He was chastised for our peace according to Isaiah 53:5.
I like how the Amplified Bible translates Ephesian 4:23-24.
Eph. 4:23 And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude],
Eph. 4:24 And put on the new nature (the regenerate self) created in God’s image, [Godlike] in true righteousness and holiness.
Renewal of the mind is a constant activity which gives us a fresh mental and spiritual attitude. As a result, we put on God’s nature and walk the way he made us to.
This article is a very small glimpse into the importance of renewing the mind. I encourage you to study more about it. As you do, you’ll begin to think the way God thinks and have his peace.
