I’ve received some requests about addressing fear. We all deal with fear of some kind. Sometimes we give in to it and sometimes we don’t. One thing’s for sure, fear will present itself and it’s what we do with it that will make the difference in our lives.
If I asked, most people probably think that the opposite of fear is faith. Actually, fear is faith in the wrong thing, but it is faith in something. Roget’s Thesaurus states assurance, calmness, happiness, faith, confidence and more are antonyms for fear. According to the bible, that is not true. 1 John 4:18 tells us perfect love is the opposite of fear.
1John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. NKJV
Love is what drives fear far from us. 1 John 4:8 states that God is love. In thinking about fear we find if we think about God, fear will leave because God is love. In many circles people don’t associate God with love. He has been presented as someone who waits with a club to beat us down when we do something wrong, but that’s not God at all.
God made a way for each and everyone of us to escape the consequences of our sin by sending Jesus to live as a man, be tormented, die on the cross and go to hell for us. Jesus never did anything wrong, but he, the Father and the Holy Spirit wanted us back and were willing to redeem us no matter what the cost.
Today we all have the opportunity to receive the gift of eternal life by asking Jesus to be the Lord of our life. As a result of doing so, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit come to live inside of us. When they come, love comes because they are love.
When fear presents itself to us, it’s up to us to focus on the love God has for us to get us through the situation. He never leaves or forsakes us.
As little children when we were afraid, we would run to our parents for safety. They would comfort us and the fear would leave. It’s the same thing with God. When fear comes we go to him. As we put our faith in him, or should I say in love, the fear goes because like a child, we know everything is going to be all right.
God loves us. He watches over us. He is an ever present help in time of need. He strengthens, comforts and encourages us. He has given us the courage to move forward and face the fear that is before us.
